Dr. Adil Najam, Vice Chancellor of LUMS, was the chief guest and keynote speaker at the Annual Leadership Conference of Shifa International Hospitals, held in Islamabad.  The Annual Leadership Conference brought together the administrative and medical leadership of Shifa Hospitals in Islambad and elsewhere.

Dr. Najam spoke about the history of LUMS and highlighted leadership lessons that emerge from the 25+ years of LUMS. He also outlined details of current trends and future opportunities for higher education in Pakistan. In particular Dr. Najam talked about the institutional challenges of establishing institutions dedicated to quality and excellence in Pakistan.

He highlighted the importance of the focus of excellence and stressed that the biggest challenge as well as the biggest impact of such a focus is the establishment of a culture of excellence – the belief that quality, rigour, and merit must never be compromised. The LUMS VC said that “it is too easy to convince yourself that a shortcut needs to be taken, that our context does not allow for maintaining or pursuing world quality and world standards, or that short-term solutions are needed and necessary; however, all of these are slippery slopes that that can lead only to the destruction of institutions and institutional sustainability.”

Shifa International hospitals have been in operation since 1987 and have emerged as a leading medical facility in the national capital, Islamabad. In recent years it has also begun expanding to the rest of Pakistan through physical as well as telemedicine campuses.
