LUMS Pro Chancellor Syed Babar Ali Visits Gates Foundation
The Pro-Chancellor of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Syed Babar Ali, visited the headquarters of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle during a July visit to the United States. During the visit the Pro-Chancellor gave a briefing on LUMS to the senior leadership of the Gates Foundation and also met Bill H. Gates Sr., the co-Chair of the Foundation.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, popularly known as the Gates Foundation, is the largest private philanthropic foundation in the world. It was founded by the founder of Microsoft Corp., Bill Gates and his wife Melinda and has an endowment of US$ 33.5 billion. The goals of the Seattle-based foundation include enhancing healthcare, reducing extreme poverty, and (in the United States), expanding educational opportunities and access to information technology.
During his visit, Syed Babar Ali, himself one of the largest and most active philanthropists in Pakistan whose Babar Ali Foundation has supported initiatives in the areas of education, health care, culture and nature conservation in Pakistan, briefed the Gates Foundation leadership on the general development issues and challenges of Pakistan and particularly those related to education and health care. The LUMS Pro-Chancellor also discussed recent initiatives at LUMS and introduced the foundation to the various developments in Pakistan and at LUMS that relate to the Foundation’s areas of interest.
