The 10-day summer coaching camp of the National Outreach Programme (NOP) concluded on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 with an interactive open house session arranged at the Pepsi Dinning Centre (PDC) of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). The session was delivered by Vice Chancellor (VC) LUMS, Dr. Adil Najam while Pro-Chancellor LUMS, Syed Babar Ali, was also in attendance.

The session was scheduled towards the end of the Summer Coaching Camp for the 337 shortlisted NOP applicants, giving them a chance to clear away any confusion they might have regarding their selection through the NOP stream at LUMS.

After a brief welcome note by Dr. Najam, LUMS Pro-Chancellor, Syed Babar Ali took podium and expressed his desire of having as many students as possible at LUMS from the NOP stream. He went on and said that LUMS wishes to reach out to the best minds from the entire Pakistan. While talking about it, Syed Babar Ali said, “Every Pakistani should be eligible for the application to LUMS, irrespective of how much money they have. Here at LUMS, merit is the only criterion.”

While laying stress upon the significance of the rigorous coaching sessions of past 10 days, Dr. Najam also explained the step by step process for the NOP students from this point onwards until the LUMS entrance test, to be held in February 2013. It was further clarified that the summer camp should be taken as a training period which aimed for both personal and academic development of the students to help them prepare for the even tougher competition during the LUMS admissions test, when they will be competing against not only the NOP applicants but also non-NOP applicants.

While explaining the purpose of the coaching session, Dr. Najam emphasised the fact that through the time spent here at LUMS, students are not only confined to academic nourishment but from here they are taught about the values, ethics and the way of life- which is nonetheless a greater education.

Towards the end of the session, the house was declared open for the question/answer session. Queries were made about the source of donations made towards NOP, total number of candidates to be selected from the NOP pool, procedure of selection of NOP, among many others. Students were also informed about the further short-listing which will take place based on the results of the assessment taken at end of Summer Coaching Camp. Additionally, candidates were informed about the Zero Tolerance Policy of LUMS against misquotation of facts and cheating- be that of any form. They were encouraged to improve on their understanding of the subject as opposed to the conventional memorising of facts.
