LUMS Young Writers Workshop
Introduction
LUMS Young Writers Workshop has been designed to address the lacuna of quality creative writing instruction in Pakistan. Through a short story contest, the workshop will identify eight young writers from across Pakistan who will be invited to participate in a five-day residential creative writing workshop at LUMS.
Mentor and Guest Speaker for the Workshop 2012
LUMS Young Writers Workshop 2012 will be mentored by writer and translator, Bilal Tanweer, who teaches fiction writing at LUMS. His fiction, poetry, essays and translations have appeared in a number of international publications including Granta, Vallum, Critical Muslim, The Caravan, and Words Without Borders. He has an MFA in Writing (fiction) from Columbia University and was selected as one of Granta’s New Voices in 2011.
The guest speaker for this year’s workshop is novelist Mohsin Hamid, author of The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Moth Smoke.

The Workshop
The second aspect of the workshop is writing. Each day, after a rigorous discussion of the pre-assigned texts, writers will have a chance to respond with their own writing. On the fourth day, writers will meet and discuss The Reluctant Fundamentalist with Mohsin Hamid. They will then work on a story, which will be collectively critiqued on the fifth day.
