Sensing 3D Scene Structure Using Lasers

About the Seminar

The problem of sensing 3D scene structure arises in the context of both terrain mapping and 3D microscopy. Laser radar (LIDAR) and confocal microscopy are the preferred laser-based techniques for sensing 3D scene structure for the two domains, respectively. While the former relies on measuring the time-of-flight of a laser pulse reflecting off the target, the latter involves a slice-by-slice imaging of the sample. The two domains are different in terms of the type of objects, magnification/demagnification and the range and resolution requirements and hence, different techniques are employed for each domain. In this talk, Professor Sheikh will present an electronically-controlled agile optics based technique that can be adapted to both domains.
