Dr. Markwell, Warden of Rhodes House Visits LUMS

Dr. Donald Markwell, the Warden of Rhodes House, Oxford, visited LUMS on March 31, 2012. Dr. Markwell is the global CEO of the Rhodes Trust and the Rhodes Scholarships. He has been visiting Pakistan and India, celebrating 65 years of Rhodes Scholarships in the two countries. He was received by LUMS faculty members who were Rhodes Scholars previously, Dr. Aamir Khan, Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB), Dr. Osama Siddique, Department of Law and Policy, School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law (MGSHSS) and Dr. Sabieh Anwar, Department of Physics, School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE).

Dr. Aamir Khan was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford where he obtained a First Class in French literature. Dr. Muhammad Sabieh Anwar completed his DPhil from the Department of Physics at Oxford in 2004, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar from Pakistan. Dr. Osama Siddique was also a Rhodes Scholar for Pakistan in 1992 and he graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in Jurisprudence.

Hassan Mahmood, head of Resource Development and Alumni Affairs, briefed Dr. Markwell on LUMS and showed him the National Outreach Programme documentary. Dr. Markwell liked the presentation and praised the initiative of providing academic opportunities at LUMS to those financially constrained. After that there was a candid discussion among those gathered. Some students also met Dr. Markwell, who spoke to them with interest. He was very impressed with students from all three schools and the various academic departments. A female student from the Department of Biology particularly impressed Dr. Markwell when she told him that she had admission and aid offers from Harvard, UPenn and Oxford and was confused about which to accept.

The Warden of Rhodes House was also shown around the LUMS campus. He visited the library, the Rausing Executive Development Centre and finally the School of Science and Engineering. Dr. Markwell was also told of the campaign to establish the Abdus Salam Chair at LUMS.

A number of LUMS graduates have received the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship award over the years.
