Message from the Dean
Pakistan is beset with problems of increasing severity and complexity and we all wish someone would resolve them. But who are these problem-solvers going to be and what would they need to meet the challenge? Would it be possible to do so without an adequate understanding of history, sociology, psychology, anthropology, philosophy, economics, law and political science; without building on the wisdom that is recorded in diverse literatures; without creating the new knowledge that is needed in a changing environment? A structure is only as strong as its foundation and in Pakistan we have neglected the intellectual foundations for too long, at too high a cost.
The Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS) at LUMS is an ambitious and farsighted attempt to repair this damage. It aspires to nurture the passionate and enlightened individuals who combine depth of knowledge with social sensitivity, intellectual humility, analytical creativity and critical thinking to effectively pursue the goal of a just, peaceful, cultured and prosperous Pakistan. It aims to prepare citizens who are firmly grounded in the reality of their society while remaining open to the best thinking from across the world. At the same time, it strives to provide motivated students with the opportunity to craft individualised majors responsive to their aesthetic and emotional needs. LUMS is among the few institutions in the country that has the breadth of offerings, the depth of teaching and the capacity for original research to deliver on this promise to create a new generation of thoughtful and confident citizens.
