LUMS Publishes Numud-Students First Urdu Literary Magazine

The Gurmani Centre for Languages and Literature has published ‘NUMŪD’, the first ever Urdu literary magazine of students at LUMS. The writings include essays, creative prose and poetry, a renowned writer’s interview and a section from world literature.
Essays include an analysis of Manto’s short story Hatak by Afeera Majeed and of Nayyar Masud’s Marāsalā by Anqa Abid. The essay on the tradition of Marsiā by Zulkifil Haider and Aqeel Ahmed is a commendable effort to understand sarāpā nigārī in the works of Mir Anees. The other three essays are also reflective pieces of writing. The short stories and a piece of humour writing, all contributed by students are particularly interesting. Furqan Ashraf’s account of life at LUMS would make a great read for the community at LUMS, specially the students. A LUMS graduate, as well as some of our faculty members and other poets have contributed to the poetry section. An interview with Mustansar Husain Tarar sheds light on the creative journey of this popular writer. An imaginary interview with Ghalib is also an interesting piece.
A team of five students edited the magazine. Umer Naeem Sukhera is the editor. The sub-editors are Sara Fatima, Mehmood Ashraf, Muhammad Faisal and Arafat Safdar. The cover design is by Taimour Amjad. Most of the contributors in this magazine are students of LUMS.
Umer Naeem in his editorial writes that this is just the beginning and for this magazine to establish itself, a lot of commitment would be required on their part, as well as the cooperation and contribution of student writers, especially from the LUMS community.
