Dr. Holden Attends Law & Society International Conference

Dr. Livia Holden, Associate Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, attended the Law and Society International Conference held in Honolulu, USA on June 8, 2012. She co-chaired the panel on “Non-State Law and Governance in South Asia and in the Diasporas” with Professor Marc Galanter, Faculty, Wisconsin University.
She presented her paper “Non-State Law and Governance in South Asia and in the Diasporas: Changing Discourse." Other presenters at the panel were Jean-Philippe Dequen, University of London, ArchanaParashar, Macquarie University and Mengia S Hong Tschalär; University of Zurich/Columbia University.
Professor Holden also screened extracts from Lady-Judges of Pakistan, a documentary film released in collaboration with Marius Holden.
This panel is the third and final step of a collaborative project among junior and senior scholars, practitioners, and activists studying the dynamics between state and non-state law and governance in the last forty years.The outcome will be a special issue to be hosted by the Journal of Legal Pluralism (Chief Editor, Melanie Wieber) of which Professor Holden will be the sole editor. This leg of the project was fully funded by the FTG at LUMS and the previous legs were funded by LUMS, CNRS/ANR Andromaque and IFP (Pondicherry).
Professor Holden was also hosted by professor Andrew Arno at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Hawaii and by Professor Cabeiri Robinson, Professor Clark Lombardi, and Professor Keith Snodgras at the South Asia Centre (University of Washington) in order to explore opportunities for academic collaboration and teaching exchange.
