Dr. Osama Siddique Appointed Amicus Curiae
Dr. Osama Siddique, Associate Professor, Department of Law & Policy, SHSSL has been appointed as an 'amicus curiae' by the honorable Justice Mansoor Ali Shah of the Lahore High Court in order to assist the court in deciding a writ petition that it is currently hearing. The petition raises important issues pertaining to the legality of the establishment of the National Testing Service (NTS) by the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology and the appointment of the same by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) as the sole body for conducting various types of university entrance examination in the country. Further, the writ generates significant queries about the capacity, rigor and transparency of such exams which in turn has a direct bearing on various aspects of higher education standards and regulation in Pakistan.
Common, civil and international law courts all over the world appoint eminent lawyers, prominent academics and respected professionals as 'amici curiae' or ‘friends of the court,’ thus formally seeking their expertise while adjudicating matters involving complex legal and policy issues as well as points of significant public interest.
