Message from the Chair

Greetings and welcome to the Department of Biology at SBASSE! We are a young but rapidly growing Department which is comprised of energetic, committed and ambitious academicians who are determined to develop world-class undergraduate and graduate programmes in Biological Sciences. Currently, the Department offers a 4-year BS degree who can opt to specialise in either Molecular Biology or Computational Biology. We also offer graduate programme MS leading to PhD programmes. To produce next generation of highly competent biologists, our undergraduate programme offers a challenging 21st century curriculum in life sciences which also emphasises interdisciplinary training in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Moreover, being part of the SBASSE provides our students with the opportunity to interact with faculty members from other disciplines, register in a variety of science courses that are of interest to them and attend weekly seminars; such activities are deemed essential for keeping our students abreast of the latest developments in especially those areas of biology which interface with other disciplines.

We aim to become a centre of excellence in basic research in biological sciences. Research programmes being developed are in Molecular and Cell Biology, Genetics and Epigenetics, Biochemistry and Biophysics, Structural and Computational Biology. In addition, we are also collaborating with clinicians and hospitals to lead a new era of biomedical research in Pakistan to understand the etiologies of commonly occurring diseases in Pakistan.

The Department of Biology offers a very supportive and collegial environment in which scientific ideas are shared and discussed openly. Such an environment is essential not only for educational and research purposes, but also encourages faculty and staff to share their laboratory resources (equipment, biologicals, etc) with their colleagues. This atmosphere of openness and receptivity coupled with a genuine enthusiasm and passion for scientific discovery is the hallmark of SBASSE which has a “no-boundary” vision and encourages cross-disciplinary collaborations between Biology and other disciplines in the School.

As a community, the Department of Biology consists of seven full time and three visiting/adjunct faculty members who are actively involved in teaching and research. Additionally, we also have a team of Research Assistants and Postdoctoral Fellows who actively contribute to the teaching of freshman and junior-level laboratory courses but spend majority of their time working on research projects and developing new ones. Collectively, the mission of our faculty and staff is to ascertain that our students receive the best possible training in theoretical and experimental aspects of biological sciences.
