LUMS Students Win Biophysics Symposium Poster Competition
LUMS School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) Biology students, Hina Iftikhar and Annum Munir secured 2nd and 4th position respectively at a poster competition held at the 1st International Biophysics Symposium held at NED University, Karachi on June 1 and 2, 2012. The winners were also awarded cash prizes.
Four SBASSE students represented LUMS at the Symposium including Saman Hussain and Zainab Rahil. There were a total of around 200 students competing at the event, representing various prestigious institutes, a few with international collaborations, including Universiti Sains Malaysia, University of Malaya-Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, SIUT (Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation), Agha Khan University, Jinnah Medical & Dental College, University of Karachi, Quaid-e-Azam University, Jamshoru University, NED university and others.
The event was a two day conference including talks from various notable national and international guest speakers. Amongst the two poster categories, LUMS students qualified for the 'Guided Student- Scholar Tier Posters' and amongst a total of 22 posters they were able to secure 2 positions out of a total of 4. The competition was a tough one since LUMS undergraduate students were competing with graduate students.
Saman Hussain, a graduate of LUMS, who completed her BS in Biology from SBASSE, represented her alma mater as an invited guest speaker at the Symposium. She gave a very impressive talk on her senior year project which was highly appreciated by the entire scientific community present at the event. Saman is presently enrolled at Harvard University, pursuing a PhD in Engineering and Physical Biology. Her research interests are the cytoskeletal proteins actin and myosin. She has worked with some of the leading experts in this field such as Prof. Justin Molloy (National Institute of Medical Research, London) and Prof. Shahid Khan (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley).
