Message from the Chair
We welcome you to the webpage of the department of Chemistry at the LUMS Syed Babar Ali School of Science & Engineering (SBASSE)! Our rapidly growing department consists of experienced, committed and highly ambitious faculty members and academic staff who are determined to develop and offer world-class undergraduate and graduate programmes in Chemistry. Currently we offer a 4‑year BS programme in Chemistry and are planning to initiate a graduate programme (MS leading to PhD) in “Chemistry” with a specialisation in nanomaterials, renewable energy technologies, organometallic synthesis and macromolecular chemistry in the near future.
Chemistry, being a central science, emphasises much of the efforts of scientists and engineers to improve life for mankind. The chemistry programme at LUMS SBASSE is thus designed to give students a grasp of the basic principles of chemical sciences through a course of study and research that underpins fundamental concepts that enables them to offer solutions to daily-life challenges. The theoretical background is further augmented through carefully designed courses of laboratory experiments to demonstrate basic concepts and experimental techniques that serve as a stepping stone to research in modern Chemistry.
World-class research active faculty members in the chemistry department are taking serious initiatives to develop facilities to conduct research at the undergraduate/graduate level with a special focus towards developing new materials such as thermoelectric materials, coatings, functionalised polymers, organometallics, and functionalised nanomaterials. These materials have potential applications in disease diagnostics and treatment, drug delivery, catalysis, optics, electronics, environmental remediation and sustainable energy production etc. In this regard, faculty has already developed national and international linkages which would be very helpful for the successful implementation of such exciting research projects.
The chemistry programme also emphasises the commercial and industrial applications of materials and actively promotes and participates in developing industry-academia collaborative research projects. We recognise that such programmes, as well as basic research at the interface of other disciplines, are essential to solve problems being faced by developing nations like ours. The main objective of the chemistry discipline at SBASSE is to produce undergraduate/graduate individuals who will have received a broad and scholarly outlook to problem-solving, whether they work in industry, R&D organisations, academia, or as entrepreneurs.
The close student-faculty interaction at SBASSE offers a unique and intellectual environment to ensure superb undergraduate/graduate education and research with a potential to produce important and exciting scientific discoveries. Students in the chemistry department are always welcomed by faculty members to discuss academic/non-academic matters related to their studies at LUMS and their future plans. We also encourage and guide our students to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) which is always helpful to get scholarships/fellowships for graduate studies at the best universities of the world.
Please take time to explore our departmental website to know more about studying/research/teaching opportunities and facilities available in our department. Any queries related to the chemistry department may be addressed to me at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will try our best to respond to you promptly.
