Natural Biosurfactants as template to produce nanomaterials

Researchers at the National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), Faisalabad, and the Department of Chemistry, SBASSE, LUMS, have recently demonstrated the use of self-assembled microtubules of natural rhamnolipids as template to produce and subsequently organise gold nanoparticles. The heat-treatment of resulting composites yielded porous gold microwires with fairly controlled nanoscale features, which may have interesting applications in catalysis, biosensing and electronics. This work was reported in “Journal of Colloid and Interface Science’ and demonstrates the capability of integrating the structural and functional diversity of biosystems to produce useful nanomaterials.
