PhD Chemistry
The Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) offers PhD Programmes of four years’ duration.
Minimum Eligibility Criteria for Admission:
Admission into any of the PhD Programmes is purely merit-based and rests solely on the following factors:
- Academic record
- Performance in the Admission Tests
- Interview Performance
- Completed application form along with all supporting documents
Academic Record
A minimum of 18 years of education is required for applying to any of the SBASSE PhD Programmes. Applicants are expected to have obtained a Master’s degree (MS, MA or MPhil) in their respective areas of specialization from HEC-accredited or recognized foreign institutions.
Applicants applying for the PhD programme in Chemistry must have a Master’s degree in any one of the following areas:
- Chemistry
- Biochemistry
- Materials Science or engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- or closely related disciplines
As a minimum academic performance, all applicants must have maintained CGPA of at least 2.4 (on a scale of 4) or at least 60% marks in Intermediate/A-level examination and all university-level degrees.
Candidates who have obtained their degrees from institutions that are not listed with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan, will be required to obtain an equivalence certificate from HEC. Performance in the Admission Tests
Applicants to the MS programme in Chemistry are required to take the LUMS Graduate Admission Test (LGAT), which is comprised of quantitative, verbal, and analytical sections. Applicants who have taken the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test (through the Educational Testing Service, ETS USA (www.ets.org)) and obtained marks at the 60th percentile or above in each of the Test sections (Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing) are not required to take the LGAT. In addition, applicants must also take the SBASSE Subject Test in Chemistry. Applicants who have taken the GRE Subject Test in Chemistry (through the Educational Testing Service, ETS USA (www.ets.org)) during the last two years and obtained marks that are at the 60th percentile or above are not required to take the SBASSE Subject Test.
Please note that the LGAT along with SBASSE Subject Test will be held on May 18, 2013 in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi.
Applicants residing outside Pakistan are required to take the GRE General Test as well as the GRE Subject Test in Chemistry.
GRE scores must be reported to LUMS officially from the testing agency by May 3, 2013 at the latest. The college code for reporting GRE scores to LUMS is 0679.
Interview performance
All applicants will be called for an interview.
Submission of a completed application form along with all supporting documents
Applicants must complete and submit their online application form on or before April 30, 2013; 5:00 p.m (PST).
The application form can be accessed online at http://admissions.lums.edu.pk. In addition, all applicants are required to submit the following supporting documents to the LUMS Admissions Office on or before April 30, 2013:
- Attested/certified copies of all academic transcripts/certificates (Secondary, Post Secondary, Bachelor’s, Master’s or any other qualification)
- GRE General and/or Subject Test scores (if applicable)
- Research statement
- Two letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes
- Two copies of the National Identity Card or valid passport
- Four passport size photographs with white background
- All other supporting documents that may be deemed relevant including testimonials demonstrating prior research experience.
Application Processing and Test Registration fees are waived off for the applicants of SBASSE Graduate (MS/PhD) Programmes for Fall 2013 admissions only.
Note:
Applicants are required to send the supporting documents as ONE package on or before April 30, 2013. Applications without correct photograph or required supporting documents (as specified in the "Documents Checklist”) will not be processed for test registration. No further reminder will be sent.
