Summer Internships at the LUMS CS Department
The Department of Computer Science at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering is offering summer internship programmes to students to engage them productively, gain relevant experience and to help them explore new research areas.
The two month long internships commenced on June 1 and will end on July 31, 2012. The programmes which are being conducted with tremendous enthusiasm and dedication by the faculty, have engaged a group of over 35 students, including sophomores and juniors.
The faculty members conducting these internship programmes are Dr. Basit Shafiq, Dr. Fareed Zaffar, Dr. Ihsan Ayyub Qazi, Dr. Murtaza Taj, Dr. Shahab Baqai and Dr. Sohaib Khan. Two PhD students, Aamer Zaheer and Muhammad Saqib Ilyas have also engaged students to work with them on their research projects. The labs at the Department - the NEWT Lab, CV Lab and Technology for the People (TPI) Lab have also taken on students to work on their projects.
The research projects on which the students are working include ‘Cryptographic Analysis of Encrypted Multimedia Data’ by Dr. Shahab Baqai; ‘Network Security’ by Muhammad Fareed Zaffar; ‘Wireless Networks, Data Centres, Electrical Grids’ by Dr. Ihsan Ayyub Qazi; ‘Toolkit for Privacy-Preserving Subgraph Discovery’ by Dr. Basit Shafiq; ‘Computer Vision’ by Sohaib Khan; ‘Computer Graphics’ by Dr. Murtaza Taj and ‘Dynamic Right-Sizing of a Cellular Network’ by Muhammad Saqib Ilyas.

Wali Usmani - Interning with Dr. Fareed Zaffar "At the moment, I am learning about the concept of data intensive workflows, their capabilities, working environment, the way they operate and how to use them over a distributed cluster. The purpose of this project is an optimisation in the flow of data to do as many computations as cheaply as possible. I believe that this internship will play an integral part in the way I look at distributed systems and networks around me because where everyone else sees a computer network, I see opportunity. The chance to work with such amazing faculty especially Dr. Fareed and Dr. Saqib Ilyas and hands-on experience with relevant software and hardware, makes this internship an amazing opportunity that will play an important part in how I proceed with Computer Science as a field."

Hafiz Salman Asif - Interning with Aamer Zaheer at the CV Lab "I am working on the ‘Kinect Depth Improvement Project’. Through this internship, I am able to understand the interface and the basic concepts and theoretical background required for this project. I can understand data and process it as well as use it in my own programmes. This is very important since all my manipulation and computations are based on this data and how well I understand it. It's been a very enjoyable experience, full of learning. It encourages you to think out of box and venture into the real scientific world and to have a taste of real problems."

Munaf Arshad - Working with Muhammad Saqib Ilyas "I am working on a project to make cellular based networks more energy efficient. The idea is to make service providers spend less and benefit the whole community in the long run. For me, working on this project is very interesting and proving to be very useful as far as learning is concerned. I’m learning how to do research, read research papers and write my own research paper, everything! It has kept me involved and made me think of innovative ways, which can one day make a large impact on the society. Although this is a rigorous and tedious internship programme but the fun and excitement of working with some of the best instructors of LUMS overshadows everything!"

Abdul Wasay - Interning with Dr. Ihsan Ayyub Qazi "I am currently involved in Google workload characterisation by employing the publicly available Google Cluster Data. In the course of my internship so far, I was introduced to diverse and novel information that complimented my previous knowledge, enhanced my horizons and left me curious for more. Two weeks into the internship and I have learnt a dozen new concepts, thought about various topics and even grasped a new programming language. For me, this summer internship serves as an exploration of interests as well as a basis for future academic and research endeavours. I have learnt so much and I am sure that the remaining time I spend here will be even more interesting and productive."

Tanzeel Ur Rehman - Interning at Technology for the People (TPI) project (SMS Education) "I am involved in designing an automated system which will communicate with registered users by sending them questions through SMS from a database and record their answers. If a user answers incorrectly, the system will send him a relatively easy question and if a user answers correctly, it will send a relatively difficult question. In this way the users will learn from the system. Moreover, each user will be assigned to a particular advisor and if someone wants help, his/her advisor contact number and name will be sent to him/her. This project requires sufficient work of databases, networking and programming (particularly JAVA). I think this project will help me understand how I can utilise my knowledge of databases, networking and programming that I acquired here at LUMS for a productive purpose. Also, I'm gaining skills which will enable me to design systems for the betterment of society."

Muhammad Ruwaifa Anwar - Interning with Dr. Ihsan Ayyub Qazi I am working on "Loss Differentiating in Wireless Transmission". The idea is to analyse wireless transmissions to find patterns differentiating in lossess due to various reasons. Thus devising methods to cope with these losses and improving efficiency in wireless transmissions for better and faster networking. This internship has enabled me to be a part of top-notch research processes in the field of networking. I have gained in-depth knowledge through this project that wouldn't have been possible through regular curriculum. The hands-on experience with all those theories and principles I have read before, now employing them in experiment labs, has surely developed a love for research in me. I am looking forward to getting more valuable experience from this summer internship.
