Welcome to the Department of Mathematics at LUMS. Since its inception in the year 2000, the Mathematics Department has grown from a small unit to a faculty of over fifteen PhDs. The Mathematics Department offers undergraduate and doctral degrees in Mathematics.

Mathematics is the rigourous study of structure, relationship, and pattern.  As such, it is both the most fundamental of all the sciences and also the most applicable. Faculty in the department of mathematics work across a wide spectrum of mathematical fields.  Some examples of interests within pure mathematics are  functional analysis, topology, fixed point theory, operator theory, graph theory, combinatorics, and symmetries of differential equations.  Interests in applied mathematics include computational statistical mechanics, numerical methods, mathematical and computational biology, stochastic processes, epidemiology, cancer kinetics, social choice theory, and statistics.

The department offers service courses for the entire LUMS community, as well as courses specifically designed for students of mathematics.  Math students take a number of courses from the main fields of mathematics, with options for exploring their own interests.  The department’s students have gone on to do graduate work in mathematics, as well as other fields like economics, at excellent institutions.
