LUMS Physlab Participates in the Pak-China Business Forum
The Physlab participated in the Pak-China Business Forum which took place from April 14 - 18, 2012. The Forum featured an international exhibition where Pakistani and Chinese businessmen, entrepreneurs, industrialists, scientific developers and educationists set up stalls showcasing innovation. This large moot, with more than 200 exhibits of various kinds, attracted thousands of people from across the Islamabad area.
Development Engineer Muhammad Wasif, Junior Technician Muhammad Yusuf and Assistant Professor at LUMS Dr. Sabieh Anwar were also present with their innovative experimental designs, and research and development portfolio. A large number of Pakistani and Chinese concerns expressed their desire in collaborating with the LUMS team in commercialising and scaling up our products.
The exhibited displays included designs enabling the webcam assisted observation of mechanical phenomena such as oscillatory motion and fluid viscosity, calorimetric techniques for determining thermodynamical properties of liquids, electrical conductivity probes and interactive comparison of magnetic field sensors. All of these devices and techniques are set for rapid commercialisation. The Physlab has already demonstrated success in this regard through its deployment of laboratories in various universities in Pakistan.
On the same occasion, Dr. Anwar who leads this project gave an invited talk in Biomedical Equipment Focus Group. He presented an overview of development activity taking place in the Physics Department at LUMS. The Focus Group led to tangible memorandums on partnerships between the clinic, industry and the academia on development and invention of new materials and instruments in biomedical implants, bone and dental materials, electrospun fibers for carbon scavenging and characterisation of biomaterials. Other participants in the Focus Group included; Dr. S. M. Awais, Head of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Mayo Hospital, Dr. Shama Khan of Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority, and Dr. Asghar Ali of Alam Medix.
