Syed Babar Ali School of Sciences & Engineering, LUMS

Department of Electrical Engineering presents

9th Teaching the Teachers Workshop

Phase-Locked Loops: Analysis & Design

Date: September 15-16, 2017
Venue: Syed Babar Ali School of Sciences & Engineering, LUMS
Time: 2:30 pm

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Phased-Locked Loops (PLLs) are everywhere around us: they tune TVs, synthesise the clock frequency for all logic circuits, extract the carrier frequency and phase in all modern wireless receivers, regenerate data in all digital links, and so on. The goal of this one and a half day long workshop is to develop the operation of these feedback loops, establish methods of analysis, and then give examples of loop design taken from contemporary communication systems.

This workshop is aimed at designers of communication systems, and at university faculty involved in teaching courses on communication systems or electronics. Participants from the two-part workshop on Communications Science and Systems in 2016 are well-prepared to attend.

WORKSHOP TOPICS

● The PLL as a multi-domain feedback loop
● Uses
● Frequency capture and phase lock
● Linearised feedback analysis in lock
● Oscillators, phase, and phase noise
● PLLs for Clock and Data Recovery from Data

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Asad Abidi received the BSc degree in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College, London in 1976, and the PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982. He worked at Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill until 1985, and then joined the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles where he is Distinguished Chancellor’s Professor of Electrical Engineering. With his students he has developed many of the radio circuits and architectures that enable today’s mobile devices. Among other awards, Professor Abidi has received the 2008 IEEE Donald O. Pederson Award in Solid-State Circuits and the Best Paper Award from the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits in 2012. The University of California, Berkeley’s Department of EECS recognised him as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2015. He was elected Fellow of IEEE in 1996, Member of the US National Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of TWAS, the World Academy of Sciences.

Professor Abidi also holds the Abdus Salam Chair at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering, LUMS, Lahore.
