In the Spotlight
Entrepreneurs in Action!
Picture this: you have one lakh rupees and one month in the mountains of beautiful Skardu. Could you launch a successful venture? Well, our students did!
The MGMT 481 course is set around an entrepreneurial project, where students are given funds to start a business. At LUMS, the duration for this is a full semester. This summer, as part of LUMSxUoBS, students had just one month.
For their first project, students held the Float Festival. Set at a dock by Upper Kachura lake, this fun-filled experience offered customers delicious food and scenic boat rides against a serene backdrop. After successfully pulling off the event of the season, students pivoted to a new project: Local Lords – a board game with twists based on life in Skardu!
These fully hands-on experiences gave new meaning to experiential learning, as students were responsible for everything – from logistics and operations to finance and marketing.
Meet the Faculty
“I feel the Entrepreneurship course has seen a lot of synergy between LUMS and Balti students. The observations varied for someone who’s local and someone who’s visiting. The problems the locals face were very new for those visiting from LUMS. This gave both set of students the opportunity to learn from their counterparts.”
Dr. Adnan Zahid, Dean, Student Affairs and
Assistant Professor, LUMS
“Because of this milestone partnership, students from both universities got the opportunity to study in a diverse environment. We designed the course in a way that students could spend time, interact and learn from each other. Even as a faculty member, co-teaching this course has taught me a lot.”
Dr. Zaheer Ullah, Assistant Professor, UoBS
Here’s What Our Young Entrepreneurs Have to Say
“The way this course was conducted was very helpful. Unless we apply the lessons ourselves, reading about them won’t help much. I have learnt a lot of things that I can apply in my own business, like how to attract customers. I have also learnt that if you work in a team, nothing is impossible.”
Syed Muharram Ali Shah, BBA ’23, UoBS
“One lesson that I have learnt is that no matter what happens, you have to keep going. We had no idea if people would show up, or if the set-up would come through. But we went through with it and ran a business from scratch in the mountains!”
Fatima Khatri, BSc '18, LUMS
The Winning Poster
Each group was required to create a poster that showcased their learning
Winning team members, Ghulam Mustafa (LUMS), Abubakar (LUMS), Shujaat Ali (UoBS), and Zeeshan (UoBS) wanted to capture the lessons they learnt through managing an event in Skardu. The result was a poster highlighting the event venue, Upper Kachura. You can also see cash on the table, because as the team explained, “Other course students played with books, we played with cash!”
Life in Skardu
Hospitality at its best
“The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger. The second time you take tea, you are an honoured guest. The third time you share a cup of tea, you become family.”
Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin, Three Cups of Tea
Everything you have heard about Balti warmth and generosity is true! Whether our students were on study or leisure field trips, it was common for locals to invite them in for a cup (or three!) of tea and snacks.
Entrepreneurship Bonus: A Family Affair!
Entrepreneurship students were lucky to have a special guest at their Upper Kachura event: Adnan Zahir - the father of their fellow LUMSxUoBS student. Mr. Zahir had come to visit and spend some quality time with his daughter. He talked to us and gave his feedback.
“It is a pleasure to see how the students managed this entire event. I am amazed at their coordination! From the location to the food – everything is so well arranged and in sync with each other. I cannot find a single fault and must appreciate their efforts.”
Adnan Zahir, father of Zaria Adnan (BA-LL.B 2025)

Monopoly. But make
it Skardu!
Now everyone can get a taste of the city’s diverse landscape and local must-visit spots, while they compete to see who champions the board. Don't forget to do some stargazing from the Katpana Desert!
