Gad and Birgit Rausing Library

The Gad and Birgit Rausing Library serves as a centre for information resources and knowledge for faculty, researchers, and students through its wide range of collections, competent staff, high-quality infrastructure, and innovative services. Currently, the library has a collection of over 300,000 books and documents, access to approximately 240,000 electronic books, 2500 audio-visual materials including CDs and DVDs, and subscriptions to more than 200 print journals. It also provides campus-wide and off-campus access to over 40,000 full-text online research journals published from the 1800s to the present. The library maintains press clippings from leading national newspapers on 51 broad subject areas related to the disciplines offered at LUMS. In line with the library’s mission to excel in supporting its users’ academic and scholarly endeavours regarding their core instructional and research requirements, the library continuously strives to introduce user-focused resources and services.

Initiatives

  • Upgraded the world-class library content management system (LibGuides) to allow users to easily locate the content they need for a particular course.
  • Arranged a book exhibition to provide the university community with an opportunity to purchase books of their interest at discounted rates. 32 vendors displayed a wide range of books on different subjects.
  • The library is actively maintaining its institutional repository by providing access to diverse resources. This includes LUMS projects, dissertations, publications, pictorial and video archives, etc.
  • Acquired over 5700+ books as donations from distinguished individuals. The collection includes highly valuable, rare, and antique titles.

Enhanced User Facilities

The library offers a range of services to support the LUMS community in teaching and research. These include:

  • Kindle e-Readers: The Library has Amazon Kindle e-readers, which are now available for borrowing. These come pre-loaded with a diverse selection of classics, fiction, and course packs. Moreover, they are configured to provide convenient access to a vast collection of resources, including online journals and e-books.
  • Book Alerts: Regular alerts regarding new arrivals are sent to the LUMS community.
  • E-Kiosks: High-tech computer terminals provide access to subscribed databases for education and research, enabling users to retrieve relevant research data efficiently.
  • FortiClient/VPN: Provides off-campus access to the library’s full-text resources from anywhere in the world.

Workshops and Trainings

  • Sessions on using library resources, accessing and using Turnitin, citations and reference management using EndNote were conducted.
  • Exploring the Financial Times: a session was arranged for students, conducted by Mr. Alberto Bravo, the Financial Times’ representative
  • Session on LexisNexis was arranged with speaker Yi Jiang, the LexisNexis representative, which covered topics including an introduction and sign-in page, sources, different search types, and more
  • Mr. Umair Khan, Turnitin representative, conducted a session on ensuring the originality of students' work, providing high-quality feedback, interpreting similarity and AI reports, as well as creating classes and uploading assignments.
  • Eastlaw Legal Resources Session: Barrister Muhammad Abubakar (Eastlaw) led a session introducing the platform’s databases, content coverage, and a live demo on effective search techniques.
