Our History
LUMS, a not-for-profit University, was established in 1985 as an institution that would provide rigorous academic and intellectual training and bring world-class education to students in Pakistan.

Governance
LUMS is a not-for-profit university that was incorporated in 1984 and was granted a charter by the Government of Pakistan the following year. The National Management Foundation (NMF) is the sponsoring body of the University, while the Board of Trustees is responsible for policymaking.
Not-for-Profit Status
LUMS is a federally chartered university and is approved as a not-for-profit organisation under section 2(36) of Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 in terms of provisions of Clause 63 of Part IV of Second Schedule to the Ordinance. Any individual or organisation making donations to LUMS is entitled to a tax credit under section 61 of Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. Moreover, the University has been granted exemption from the levy of income tax under Section 159 of the Ordinance, thus, tax is not deductible on payments made to the University.
The National Management Foundation
The Board of Governors of the National Management Foundation (NMF) raise funds for the University’s operations and its infrastructure requirements. Consequently all University buildings and land are owned by the NMF.
Many members of the Board of Governors of the NMF are representatives of the business community and form a crucial link between LUMS and the business world.
Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees comprises of leading members of the business community, academia and representatives of the government. The principal functions of the Board are to set broad policy guidelines and to review the operations of the University.
