Faculty Profile

Dr. Muhammad Azeem

Assistant Professor

Shaikh Ahmed Hassan School of Law

I was born and raised in the industrial and working class city of Lyallpur (Faisalabad). I obtained a B.Sc.  Electrical Engineering, from the Univ. of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. Being involved in activism against child labour at the time, I became impressed by the media writings of Asma Jahangir and others. I switched tracks, started writing in the media and completed an LLB, at the University of the Punjab, Lahore. I practiced law and public interest litigation around issues concerning workers and peasants in the lower and High Court for 6 years. I then decided to go to Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto, to work on a PhD.

But first I wrote three books which were quite popular in Pakistan. These are WTO and Globalization (Publisher: Dar-ul-Shaoor, Language: Urdu. 2006. 500 pp.)   2 editions; The Problems of Free Trade: An Historical Analysis(Publisher: Dar-ul-Shaoor, Language: Urdu. 2006. 750 pp.)   2 editions; Multi –National Corporations: A New Face of Imperialism?(Publisher: Dar-ul-Shaoor, Language: Urdu.2002. 400 pp.)   which went into 8 editions.

At Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto, Canada, I completed an LLM writing on the topic:The Collapse of the WTO and Rethinking of Development Theory? In 2014 I successfully defended my PhD in Law, from Osgoode Hall Law School on the topic:The weaknesses of the ‘good governance’ paradigm: a study of the judiciary in Pakistan

Presently I am working on a book manuscript, out of the material that I collected for my PhD dissertation, which is about the history of the liberal legal project in Pakistan. I aim to challenge the dichotomous understanding of democracy vs. dictatorship as a way of understanding the judiciary’s decisions, discourses, adjudication, and appointments, and argue that the judiciary, as a part of the state, has been a link in the reproduction of state and political inequality in Pakistan.

My current teaching and intellectual interests involve connect an interest in the marginalized populations with theoretical issues in law to take us beyond liberalism.

I am also an active member of the Progressive Writers Association of Lahore, and write poetry and criticism in Urdu and Punjabi.
