Students should approach major selection as an informed but flexible decision by reflecting on subjects they genuinely enjoy and perform well in, rather than choosing solely based on perceived job prospects or external pressure. Students should consider their natural interests, the types of problems they find engaging, and the skills they'd like to develop. It's also important to recognize that their chosen major does not determine their future career path. Employers value transferable skills like critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving that can be developed across all majors offered by MGSHSS. Students should focus on selecting a field where they would be engaged enough to excel academically and develop essential transferable skills.
New students are guided through the Orientation week, which combines exciting online and in-person activities to acquaint students with peers, faculty members, advisors, and the LUMS campus. Orientation week helps students prepare for intellectual challenges, learn about essential university policies, and form close ties with university support services officials as well as other members of their cohort. Academic Advising staff and PALS are available year-round to support students and guide their academic journey at LUMS.
The MGSHSS Academic Advising Unit (AAU) team and faculty advisors assist students in identifying and meeting their academic targets. Through proactive communication with students, the unit and faculty help students develop and implement strategies in their pursuit of academic excellence. MGSHSS and CAPS provide in-house counselling and pastoral care to ensure students' health and wellness. The School also ensures that all first-year students meet with faculty advisors throughout the year.
Over the decades, MGSHSS has earned a global reputation in the field of humanities and social sciences. A community of world-class scholars, vibrant teaching, internationally recognized research, and an innovative curriculum all combine to produce an undergraduate programme of the highest international standards. The vibrant intellectual environment at MGSHSS has nurtured leaders, thinkers, writers, and innovators.
Our students from diverse academic disciplines pursue career paths aligned with their interests in academia, policymaking, politics, media, the corporate sector, the development sector, government, and international organizations. Each year, approximately 95% of MGSHSS graduates secure employment within 6 to 9 months of graduation. Placement data from the past five years indicates that their initial roles have been in functional areas such as research, data analysis, management, marketing, sales, finance, and human resources, supply chain, and public relations across a wide range of sectors, including corporate, finance and banking, development, education, marketing and media, MNC, ed-Tech, and consultancy.
Pursuing higher education is also a highly sought-after path among MGSHSS graduates. Alumni data indicate that our students have continued their academic journeys at top-ranked international universities across the globe — including Yale, Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Columbia, Princeton, UPenn, Cornell, UCLA, Dartmouth, and Brown. They have pursued a wide range of disciplines such as public policy, development studies, conflict and resolution, climate sustainability, economics, history, data analysis, arts and object design, business management, finance, fiction writing, filmmaking, music, strategy, and business analytics — among many others, reflecting the diverse academic and professional interests of our graduates.
To support students in their transition to professional life, MGSHSS has established a dedicated Career Center that provides comprehensive guidance throughout their undergraduate journey. The Center assists students in exploring and planning their career paths through initiatives such as one-on-one counseling, in-class career development sessions, workshops, and the Alumni Mentorship Program.
