Career Services Office in collaboration with ShARE Society, an international student organisation, conducted a grooming session on Professional Communication on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 over Zoom. The target audience for this session were all undergraduate and MS students from Freshmen to Senior year.
Ms. Sumayah Noor and Mr. Zain ul Abideen, Members, ShARE Society, introduced the guest speakers. Then Dr. Amna Khalid, Assistant Professor at LUMS, was invited to talk about professional communication skills with the participants. Dr. Khalid shared some very important and useful tips of business communication. She explained that official communication should be brief, precise and to the point without the need to add stories. She also emphasised that when writing a specific communication, one should be very careful that the message is simple and complete by using positive phrases. Dr. Khalid told the students that they should do some research about the organisation and its working culture before applying for any particular job.
Then Mr. Ateeb Gul, Teaching Fellow at LUMS, was invited who endorsed Dr. Amna’s points. He further told the participants that professional and effective communication skills are the basic skills every individual should have. He also highlighted some basic rules of email etiquette, including respecting your audience, using simple language and checking the spellings, font sizes, colours and formatting before sending it to the other person.
In the end, Dr. Khalid talked about document design and explained that everyone should research how to design their documents to impact their audience. Emails and letters nowadays are all about how you present information. She gave the students advice that whether in academia or the professional world, an individual should show that they are passionate about themselves and their work.
The session ended with an interactive questions and answers session.
