The Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL) BA-LL.B (Hons) is a five-year, full-time programme, consisting of a two-year B.A. phase followed by the LL.B degree, accredited by the Pakistan Bar Council and the HEC as a qualifying law degree. The combination of a B.A and an LLB in one programme offers our students a solid grounding in the humanities and sciences followed by a thorough professional training in law.
At SAHSOL, classes are taught through a combination of lectures and seminar groups. Students are assessed by a mixture of graded instruments: examinations, quizzes, class participation, presentations, and written assessments. The School of Law prides itself on an interactive teaching environment. A historically low student-to-faculty ratio has ensured that students receive personalized attention from members of the faculty. We also provide a dedicated office of student advisement and structured mentorship by peers and alumni.
If you are seeking a challenging, rigorous, interdisciplinary exposure to law and related disciplines, the BA-LL.B programme is designed for you. Whilst the focal point of the programme is the Pakistani legal system, the teaching methodology encompasses a critical, comparative approach to promote a deeper understanding of the law. The ambit of study and analysis is not just laws as they exist and operate, but also how policy impacts laws, and how law, policy and society interact.
Students are given plenty of opportunities to undertake legal internships, contribute to the LUMS Law Journal, participate in national and international moot court competitions, assist with faculty research, undertake pro bono work, and study clinical courses.
The latest addition to the School facilities is the Centre for Chinese Legal Studies. Set up in collaboration with Wuhan University, China, it serves as a hub for the research and teaching of Chinese legal studies and related topics in Pakistan.
The distinct advantages of a legal education in which students are encouraged to develop their critical faculties and to approach problem solving from various disciplinary angles are realized through the dedication and skill of our permanent faculty. This is a research active faculty with diverse area specialisms. What is shared, however, is a common commitment to incorporating contextual, historical, and critical approaches to the study of law. SAHSOL merges the vocational and academic content of legal education in a manner that is both informed by and generative of research. The faculty regularly publish books and contribute to leading journals in a range of fields.
The BA-LL.B programme is split into two parts: the first two years consist of the BA phase, followed by the three-year LL.B phase.
The three-year LL.B. phase consists of mandatory core law courses, such as Criminal Law, Contract Law, and Public Law. Students complement these core courses with a wide variety of elective law courses offered under five specialized streams; Law, Government and Citizenship, Criminal Justice, Business Law, Legal Theory, and International & Comparative Law.
The LLB consists of 22 core/mandatory law courses (referred to as “Major Cores”), amounting to a total of 81 credit hours, and 5 elective law courses (referred to as “Major Electives”), amounting to a total of 19-20 credit hours. In total, 96 credit hour requirement needs to be fulfilled.
