In the twenty-third episode, we're joined by Dr. Ihsan Ayyub Qazi (BSc 2005), an award-winning computer scientist and educator recognised for his impactful contributions to the field. Dr. Qazi has received several prestigious awards, including the Google Faculty Research Award, three Meta/Facebook Research Awards, the Google exploreCSR Award, and the ACM SIGCOMM CCR Best Paper Award.
As a tenured Associate Professor of Computer Science at LUMS and Principal Investigator at the National Center in Big Data & Cloud Computing (NCBC), Dr. Qazi leads research on Internet applications, infrastructure, and their societal impacts. His work encompasses digital development, big data and cloud computing, misinformation, and online privacy. He has spearheaded large-scale projects on digital literacy, connectivity, and affordability. His research has been published in top conferences and journals across computer science, economics, and interdisciplinary fields, including IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, ACM SIGCOMM, TheWebConf (WWW), ACM CHI, ACL, ECML PKDD, INTERSPEECH, the Journal of Development Economics, and the Harvard Kennedy School Misinformation Review. Dr. Qazi has also delivered seminars at leading institutions such as MIT, Stanford, CMU, and Princeton, as well as at tech giants like Google, Meta/Facebook, and Microsoft Research.
Dr. Qazi received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 2010 and was a Visiting Research Scientist at UC Berkeley in 2017. He has held positions at BBN Technologies (Cambridge, USA) and the Centre for Advanced Internet Architectures (Melbourne).
