Profiles of Panelists
Mehreen Zahra-Malik – Journalist
Ms. Zahra-Malik is Pakistan Editor for Arab News, one of the largest English-language newspapers in the Middle East. Previously a staff correspondent for Reuters, her reportage has appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Washington Post, Al Jazeera, Foreign Policy and several other international publications. She was previously Deputy Editor at The News, and also served as the News Editor of The Friday Times. She has contributed reportage and opinion to Reuters, Newsweek, The New Republic, Al Jazeera English, The Hindu, Indian Express, Tehelka, Dawn, Express Tribune, Daily Times, The Friday Times and others. Ms. Zahra-Malik has an MA in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Amber Rahim Shamsi – Multimedia Journalist
Ms. Shamsi is an award-winning multimedia journalist who hosts ‘Sawaal with Amber’ on Samaa TV. She has formerly hosted the ‘Newswise’ news and current affairs show on Dawn News, and has worked with the BBC World Service as a bilingual reporter, presenter and producer.
Asad Hashim – Online Correspondent, Al Jazeera English
Mr. Hashim is a journalist currently serving as an online correspondent with Al Jazeera English based in Islamabad. He has covered stories in South Asia and the Middle East, and reports on extremism, security, politics and human rights, primarily focusing on Pakistan. He has previously worked as the Pakistan Correspondent for Thomson Reuters.
Sadaf Khan - Co-Founder, Media Matters for Democracy
Ms. Khan has been associated with media and media development sector in Pakistan since 2002. She has worked with major print and broadcast outlets in the country, mostly behind the camera and has dabbled in all forms of writing and production. For the last four years she has been working with media development CSOs, mainly for policy advocacy, media ethics, journalist safety and capacity building for development, data and digital journalism. With a desire to expand her academic and knowledge base, she took a year off from work, to study development communications and media/ ICT governance policies at the London School of Economics as a Chevening Scholar.
