CCLS Launches Introduction to Chinese Business Law Course

The Centre for Chinese Legal Studies recently concluded a two-week seminar course at the Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL), titled Introduction to Chinese Business Law. The course, offered from the February 3 - 20, 2020, was taught by Professor Matthew S. Erie, Associate Professor of Modern Chinese Studies, University of Oxford.
Professor Erie’s interdisciplinary work stimulates conversations between law and anthropology to study the procedural aspects of domestic and cross-border commercial dispute resolution. His current research project examines ‘legal hubs,’ sub-national jurisdictions that develop and implement their own procedural law for cross-border commercial dispute resolution.
The introductory course on Chinese Law provided an overview of the legal aspects of doing business in China as well as of Chinese doing business outside of China, addressing topics such as the regulatory and legislative landscape for foreign direct investment into China and the legal requirements of conducting business in China, amongst others.
The course was well-received by the students and guests alike. Students in the class also had the opportunity to meet and interact with Justice Jawad Hassan, Honourable Sitting Judge of the Lahore High Court, Mr. S. M. Naveed, former President, Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Professor Zhang Jingjing, Founder, China Accountability Project - the latter joining the class via video call.
