Syed Babar Ali Directs Proceeds from his Book to the National Outreach Programme
Syed Babar Ali, the Founding Pro Chancellor of LUMS, has recently directed the proceeds from his book, Learning From Others, towards the LUMS National Outreach Programme (NOP).
The NOP, launched in 2001, is a prestigious scholarship that extends the benefits of world-class education to talented students all over Pakistan. The Programme focuses on identifying exceptional students from remote towns and villages and supports their undergraduate studies at LUMS. To date, LUMS has inducted over 1,200 NOP scholars, out of which around 723 have graduated and are pursuing their dreams and helping their families and communities.
Mr. Ali’s extraordinary achievements as an entrepreneur, and philanthropist have left a lasting footprint across Pakistan. He founded Packages Ltd. and Milkpak Limited (now Nestlé Pakistan), and serves on the board of several conglomerates such as Sanofi Aventis, Siemens and Coca-Cola Beverages. His philanthropic efforts through the Babar Ali Foundation support several non-profits in health and education.
His pioneering efforts in building management capacity and an ambitious vision for excellence in higher education in Pakistan resulted in the establishment of LUMS in 1985.
Mr. Ali received honours and awards from the Government of Sweden, the Netherlands, an OBE from Britain (1997), and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Laws from McGill University, Montreal, Canada (1997).
He was also elected to the 2020 class of the prestigious American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Recognised for his immeasurable contributions to education, advancing the public good and promoting social equity in Pakistan, Mr. Ali has been acknowledged in the category of ‘Business, Corporate, and Philanthropic Leadership’. He joined an esteemed cohort of over 270 innovators and leaders from across sectors, disciplines, and geographies.
Learning From Others shares insights on his life journey, including his involvement with various organisations and ventures. It also highlights the initiatives he has undertaken with regards to promotion of education as well as the public duties he has fulfilled during his life. It was also translated in Urdu, and titled Kamal-e-Ham Nasheen. The proceeds of both the English and Urdu versions have been directed towards the NOP.
