LUMS Student Awarded Fellowship at Urbana Champaign
Abdul Rafae Noor, LUMS batch of 2020 BS Computer Science, has been awarded the prestigious Sohaib and Sara Abbasi Computer Science Fellowship for academic excellence at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign (UIUC). The fellowship covers the full cost of tuition in addition to a stipend. Rafae will pursue a PhD in Computer Science at Grainger College of Engineering at UIUC.
During his time at LUMS, Rafae developed novel Automated Software-Engineering tools to optimise programmes for particular deployment requirements. Working directly with compiler optimisations and low-level system code enabled him to develop effective tools for various computer architectures of high complexities. Through these projects, he has also collaborated with distinguished researchers at the SRI International (Stanford Research Institute) to advance understanding in the field of Programme Debloating.
In the future, Rafae hopes to target the increasingly interesting field of Deep Learning by developing performance optimisations to popular libraries such as TensorFlow through heterogeneous parallel programming. His time at LUMS proved to be an invaluable learning experience and the guidance he received from the faculty at the Computer Science department will continue to inspire him in the future.
