SAHSOL's Third Annual Conference: The Futures of International Law
In April, the Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL) hosted its third annual conference, The Futures of International Law at LUMS, bringing together leading scholars and experts to critically examine the widening gap between the ideals of international law and its real-world application. Across two days of panels, participants explored how power imbalances, weak enforcement, and local resistance continue to challenge the legitimacy and effectiveness of international legal frameworks.

Scholars examined how economic, political, and territorial factors shape legal outcomes, often to the benefit of powerful states and corporations. The issue of human rights, particularly the protection of climate refugees and vulnerable communities, was also a focal point, with calls to localise international legal norms and better align them with domestic realities.

The closing plenary brought together two seasoned voices in international law and diplomacy: Dr. Parvez Hassan, Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of Pakistan, and Ambassador Zamir Akram, former Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, who both called for more inclusive and enforceable global legal regimes.
