In the seventeenth episode, we're joined by Momin Ali Munshi (BSc 2016), the Founder of Galaxy Lollywood. Since a young age, Munshi has been obsessed with cinema. Although he graduated with an Economics degree from LUMS, Munshi’s true love was never numbers or the science behind them but the art of cinema. In a time when Pakistan had little to offer in terms of quality cinema, he not only appreciated but also celebrated every little piece of entertainment that was released for the big screens. It was his love for Pakistani cinema and the Pakistani entertainment industry in general that led to the birth of Galaxy Lollywood.
A passion project for a young university student who had so much to say about the Pakistani entertainment industry both as its consumer and its well-wisher, Galaxy Lollywood quickly found a substantial following. It was Munshi’s relentless keeness and his integrity as a fan and critic of Pakistani cinema that gained Galaxy Lollywood respect in an industry that doesn’t necessarily reward honesty. And when the boom of the Pakistani entertainment industry happened, Munshi’s foresight made sure Galaxy Lollywood was leading when it came to entertainment portals. The small blog-type website turned into a profitable business venture with a successful social media presence and a YouTube channel, with Munshi being the prominent face of it all. Not one to follow trends but to make them, Munshi can be credited as being the first to bring the format of digital talk shows to Pakistan.
Perhaps what makes him successful at what he does, despite his young age, is his ability to perceive the flow of the tide. This is why Munshi didn’t hesitate to expand the horizons of Galaxy Lollywood to include Pakistani dramas in the topics it covered. Bringing in a never-before-seen flavour to critiquing dramas, Munshi also produces a weekly drama reviewing programme and co-hosts it with his mother, aptly titled, Amma, Tv Aur Mein. Free from the chains of pseudo-intellectualism, Amma, TV Aur Mein, reviews Pakistani dramas as they are meant to be enjoyed, which is why the show and the mother-son duo are a hit for fans of Pakistani dramas worldwide. For as long as the Pakistani entertainment industry keeps expanding and growing, Munshi will continue to find ways to keep up with it and make new trends along the way.
