Abstract
The world has seen an immense increase in material possessions; our consumption patterns have sky rocketed like never before; our happiness, contentment and success are increasingly associated with material gains; and while our resources are being consumed at a rapid rate, we are witnessing, in parallel, issues such as global warming and depletion of the planet’s natural resources. Such a state of our species and our planet demands well-thought-out research on the topic of materialism.
The first paper applies a systematic literature review technique and focuses on the existing research on materialistic values; in doing so, it reveals gaps within existing literature. The second paper explores employees' value incongruence in the context of their leadership and investigates the corresponding behaviour and its impact on employees' own values. The third paper investigates the role employees' values play in defining their work-life ideologies.
With these three papers, the thesis digs deep into the concept of materialism and offers nuanced insights while highlighting theoretical and practical implications.
