Dr. Momin Uppal, LUMS Faculty, Selected for HEC Best University Teacher Award
LUMS is delighted to announce that Dr. Momin Uppal has been honoured with the Best University Teacher Award in the ‘Physical Sciences & Engineering’ category by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan. This prestigious award was established by the HEC in 2003 to recognise outstanding teachers and incentivise faculty members to enhance their pedagogical skills. The award will be conferred to him in a ceremony in Islamabad on June 23, 2022.
An Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), Dr. Uppal is renowned for being a dedicated, passionate, and innovative teacher. After receiving his BS degree from GIK Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, he went on to pursue his Masters and PhD from Texas A&M. He is an accomplished researcher in the areas of advanced communication, machine learning and information theory. Dr. Uppal has provided exemplary mentorship to his students and junior faculty and successfully demonstrated how to link outstanding teaching with research excellence. In 2021, he was also a recipient of the inaugural LUMS Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Teaching Excellence; an initiative that celebrates exceptional and inspirational teachers at the University.
Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor (VC), LUMS, commented, “This achievement complements his leadership in research addressing national grand challenges with a truly interdisciplinary focus. We congratulate Dr. Uppal for his significant and ongoing contributions to LUMS and to the broader communities we serve.”
Commenting on receiving this accolade, Dr. Uppal said, “I am proud to have received this honour and recognition. But more than anything, I am humbled since the ‘I’ is nothing but only one little piece in the galaxy of stars that we call LUMS. If there is one thing that a decade of teaching has taught me is that I have much more to learn. I continue to learn, I continue to move, and I continue striving to do what I cannot.”
Dr. Sabieh Anwar, Dean, SBASSE, expressed his pride at Dr. Uppal’s achievement and shared, “He continues to inspire me with his comprehensive leadership in teaching, research, and professional contributions to the discipline of electrical engineering, and science and technology. The way he has blended invention with discovery and applied fundamental principles and algorithmic tools to solving grand challenges and importantly, carried his students in this odyssey, is trailblazing.”
LUMS congratulates Dr. Uppal and wishes him continued success.
