Human Resources at LUMS Marks International Women’s Day with a Session on Wellness
The Office of Human Resources at LUMS organised an awareness session on women’s physiological well-being to mark International Women’s Day 2022. The session, held on March 7, was led by a Dr. Noreen Zafar, an expert on women’s health. The event was attended by a large number of women staff members from various offices and schools at LUMS.
Dr. Zafar started the session by talking about the importance of women’s health and how frequently it is ignored across Pakistan, especially by women themselves. "Being educated and understanding how our body works and what measures we can take to improve our physical, psychological and social well-being is a privilege," she said.
She highlighted the concerns that are common among girls and women related to body image, physical activities, weight issues along with the more serious medical issues such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOs), reproductive complications, fibroids, endometriosis, hormone imbalance, thyroid dysfunction, fertility etc. She explained the difficulties an uneducated woman faces in her life due to a lack of awareness and a support system by using examples of her own encounters with such women.
Stressing on the importance of regular checkups with gynaecologists, especially after the age of 35, Dr. Zafar suggested specific tests that women should consider taking. She also spoke about the importance of self-examination and how it can diagnose certain ailments such as cervical diseases in very early and treatable stages. She also encouraged women to speak up, share and seek help instead of hiding their challenges.
“Women who are educated and well-informed can help spread awareness within their surroundings and guide those who fail to understand the concept of women’s health,” added Dr. Zafar.
The session ended with an interactive question and answer session that lasted longer than expected. Dr. Zafar was presented with many pertinent questions regarding medical issues and challenges faced by women, which she answered in detail.
