LUMS and NETSOL Sign MoU to Collaborate on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
LUMS and NETSOL Technologies Limited have entered into an agreement to collaborate on activities related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). An MoU signing ceremony took place on October 25 at LUMS between Dr. Tariq M. Jadoon, Acting Vice Chancellor and Provost, LUMS and Dr. Sahibzada Ali Mehmud, Head of Professional Services, NETSOL. Also present at the occasion were Ms. Fatika Qureshi, Project Manager, NETSOL; Mr. Omar Khan, Program Manager, Innovation Group; Dr. Hamad Alizai, Chair, Department of Computer Science; and Dr. Momin Ayub Uppal, Chair, Department of Electrical Engineering, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering, LUMS.
Speaking highly about the collaboration at the ceremony, Dr. Jadoon, said, “LUMS is thrilled to partner with NETSOL to drive collaborative research in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, focusing on real-world applications and innovation. This MoU strengthens the bridge between academia and industry, paving the way for an AI innovation lab, impactful conferences, and skill-building programmes to create a pool of trained individuals who will advance Pakistan's AI landscape and address industry challenges.”
Both NETSOL and LUMS plan to jointly work on research and development efforts to explore innovative applications in AL, ML, and Generative AI, with a focus on real-world industry challenges. LUMS faculty and NETSOL AI/ML experts will work together on research teams and hold AI and ML-focused conferences, hackathons, and competitions. NETSOL will also be offering internships to LUMS students for hands-on experience in industry-grade AI/ML projects to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical industry needs.
The collaboration will lead LUMS faculty to join hands with NETSOL to design curriculum-aligned training sessions, ensuring that students are industry-ready. The LUMS faculty members will also have the opportunity to participate in research at NETSOL to collaborate on cutting-edge AI/ML initiatives. Conversely, NETSOL experts will be invited to deliver lectures and seminars at LUMS. Experts from both NETSOL and LUMS will work on joint research publications and intellectual property (IP) rights in the area. Talks are also ongoing for the establishment of a joint AI innovation lab that will be a hub for research, experimentation, and prototyping.
Dr. Mehmud showed enthusiasm on the occasion, saying, “We are excited to announce a new partnership! We’ve signed an MoU with LUMS to collaborate in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning, with a special focus on generative AI and large language models. Through this industry-academia partnership, both organisations aim to leverage research and development, fostering innovative solutions and unlocking new opportunities for various real-world applications. Looking forward to the exciting work ahead!”
