Internationally acclaimed Pakistani French apparel designer, Mr. Mehmood Bhatti, visited LUMS on March 24, 2021. He is a recipient of Sitara-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s highest civilian honour. His brand, Bhatti, is a multi-million dollar company with presence in ten countries including Finland, Japan, UK, and USA.
Mr. Bhatti hails from Lahore. After completing his graduation from Government College University in 1977, he went to Paris where he completed his MBA. His continuous hard work and determination helped him in establishing his own retail outlet in 1980, and in a very short span of time, his business flourished. He now has almost 500 designers working for him.
Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, LUMS, along with Mr. Shahid Hussain, Rector, LUMS, and Mr. Hyder Ali, member of the LUMS Management Committee, welcomed Mr. Bhatti. They apprised him of the different initiatives at the University, including the ‘Learning Without Borders’ philosophy, and the National Outreach Programme (NOP).
Dr. Ahmad thanked Mr. Bhatti for coming to LUMS and said, “Your exceptional journey is an inspiration for everyone who believes in hard work, and listening to your struggle will be a lesson for our youth.”
Impressed by the NOP, an initiative that inducts talented youth from across the country, Mr. Bhatti said, “The best thing about LUMS is merit. The fact that you reach out to people from different towns and villages in Pakistan, entirely based on merit, is the reason why people believe in this University and are willing to invest in it.” He also expressed that his goal is to help upcoming generations have a brighter future and with universities like LUMS, this goal can be achieved.
Mr. Hussain also shed light on different scholarships that LUMS provides to empower women. “LUMS has created an impact in helping women achieve their dreams by providing 50 per cent scholarships to women admitted to our graduate programmes at the Suleman Dawood School of Business. We are proud of the fact that the majority of our female undergraduates get enrolled in some of the best universities in the world.”
Mr. Ali also expressed his gratitude to Mr. Bhatti for proposing the idea of having a European funding body that can help talented scholars obtain an education at LUMS.
A group photo was taken on the occasion, and Dr. Ahmad presented LUMS Founding Pro Chancellor, Syed Babar Ali’s autobiography to Mr. Bhatti. This was followed by a campus tour, where Mr. Bhatti was accompanied by the Vice Chancellor, Rector, and Mr. Ali.
During his visit, Mr. Bhatti also talked to young entrepreneurs and shared lessons from his professional journey as part of the National Incubation Centre's Entrepreneur in Conversation series. You can view his session here.
