Till We Meet Again: A Heartfelt Thank You Penned by Former Vice Chancellor, Dr. Arshad Ahmad
As my five-year term as Vice Chancellor of LUMS ends, I want to express my immense appreciation and gratitude to the many people who’ve been a part of it. To our trustees, provost, deans, directors, heads – and to our amazing students and staff, our shared experience has been transformative. Thank you!
Returning to Pakistan after a career in Canada (and without my family) was difficult, but the experience was incredibly fulfilling and enriching. There are so many remarkable people I’ve had the privilege to build friendships with that will last a lifetime.
LUMS can be proud of a more diverse and inclusive university, coming together during the pandemic, supporting flood victims and leading community initiatives. Faculty and staff turned adversity into opportunity and never looked back. Our graduate programmes grew remarkably, our global ranking improved significantly, and our international footprint is stronger than ever before. Extraordinary examples of a great institution that inspires.
In my last report in August, we highlighted the launch of the National Centre for Nanoscience & Technology poised to advance quantum photonics, materials, and optics and setting the stage for a major impact that uses big data and our global role to address climate change. Another project very close to my heart saw 300 students take 7 experiential courses in spectacular Skardu strengthening our ties with the University of Baltistan. And for the first time we also curated a CEO Leadership Retreat which brought together some of Pakistan’s top leaders to explore how they can amplify their work to build a better Pakistan.
Pakistan is facing tough economic, social and environmental challenges. LUMS has shown how one institution can step up to the plate, think outside the box and push the boundaries of innovation and progress. Our founders’ vision, carried out in the work of its tremendous staff and students, has cemented LUMS as one of South Asia’s, and the global south’s, premier universities. This institution is truly a positive force for possibility, change, and hope for the country, and it must be protected so it can thrive for generations to come.
Thank you all for your commitment to our university, and for the time you dedicate to making it better every day. I cannot overstate the importance of your devotion to this institution and its mission. Our country is the better for it, and you all have my enduring respect and friendship.
Until we meet again!
Arshad, Vice Chancellor, LUMS (2018 – 2023)
