Starting Young: LUMS Summer School and Maths Circles
The LUMS Summer School is one such initiative that offers an unparalleled educational experience for learners aged 8-19. Since its inception in 2017, the programme has inspired students with meticulously crafted courses that combine rigorous academics with a rich variety of extracurricular activities, cultural excursions, and social events. This holistic approach fosters not only academic knowledge but also lifelong skills and friendships among students from across the nation.
Living on campus during the Summer School provides students with a taste of college life. This immersive environment allows students to develop crucial life skills such as time management, self-discipline, and problem-solving, which are essential for future success in higher education and beyond. Additionally, the campus experience cultivates a strong sense of community. Students build lasting friendships with peers from diverse backgrounds, enhancing their social skills and cultural awareness, and creating a supportive network that encourages collaboration and mutual learning.
The courses are designed to celebrate individuality and inclusivity, promoting academic free thinking in a safe and respectful environment. The curriculum helps prospective college students prepare for the upcoming application season, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to excel in their academic pursuits.
While the Summer School provides a broad platform for academic and personal growth, the university also recognises the importance of nurturing specific academic interests from an early age. LUMS Math Circles, initiated by the Department of Mathematics in 2021, aims to spark a lasting interest in mathematics among school children across Pakistan. This initiative targets students in grades 6 to 12 from diverse backgrounds, covering a wide range of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) topics to enhance mathematical skills and transform perceptions of math education.'
Math Circles extend beyond traditional classroom settings, offering problem-solving and mathematical modeling activities that deepen students' understanding and appreciation of mathematics. Workshops, regular meetings, and teacher networks are held in collaboration with STEAM Pakistan. These sessions utilise innovative techniques such as props, worksheets, and animations to make math accessible and enjoyable for all participants.
Regular sessions held on campus, along with school visits, actively engage students of all ages, encouraging creative and critical thinking. LUMS Math Circles also conduct experiential workshops for teachers that cover a wide array of topics, from ancient to modern mathematics, highlighting the role of mathematics in various fields, including artificial intelligence, physics, and chemistry.
LUMS Math Circles create an interdisciplinary and inclusive learning environment aimed at reducing math anxiety and making math an engaging subject for everyone. Activities are conducted in both English and Urdu to ensure broad accessibility. The programme emphasises balanced gender and class representation, drawing participants from various schools and communities. Students are grouped for collaborative tasks, making math a fun and inclusive experience.
