The Gurmani Centre for Languages and Literature invites you to a special screening of Bhashaili (Bangla for 'adrift'), a documentary that brings to light the untold stories of Pakistani Bengalis living in Karachi. The film captures their everyday experiences — of love, loss, and belonging — while exploring how this vibrant community navigates life on the margins. Rich in cultural heritage and deeply tied to the sea, these communities reflect Karachi’s overlooked histories and hidden geographies.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the filmmakers and researchers behind the project:
Dr. Humera Iqbal (Associate Professor, University College London): Researches family life, migration, and minority communities and led the Partition of Identity project that inspired the film
Jawad Sharif (Award-Winning Filmmaker): Known for Indus Blues and K2 & The Invisible Footmen, with a focus on art, culture, and social change
Tahera Hassan (Human Rights Lawyer & Founder, Imkaan Welfare Organization): Works on legal rights, healthcare, and citizenship for stateless communities.
Dr. Anushay Malik (Senior Lecturer, Simon Fraser University): A social historian focused on labour, migration, and working-class narratives in South Asia
Moderator: Dr. Nida Kirmani (Associate Professor, LUMS): Researches gender, urban marginality, and social movements in Pakistan
We look forward to seeing you there for an evening of powerful storytelling and important conversations!
