LUMS Celebrates its Brightest Students at Dean’s Honour List Ceremony

The Dean’s Honour List (DHL) Ceremony at LUMS recognises students' outstanding academic achievements. This year, the events were spread over two days, from December 3 to 4, and gave students the opportunity to celebrate their success in the presence of their teachers, parents and friends. The University’s senior leadership, including Founding Pro Chancellor, Syed Babar Ali and Vice Chancellor, Dr. Arshad Ahmad were present at the ceremonies and were joined by the deans and faculty.
Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB)
A total of 231 undergraduate students from SDSB were honoured at this year’s ceremony, and the event was attended by more than 650 guests; these included 65 students from the SDSB Class of 2022; 80 students from the Class of 2023 and 86 students from the Class of 2024.
In addition to being included in the Dean’s Honour List for 2020-21, SDSB students performed notably well at the University level. BSc Management Science junior, Alina Anjum, was recognised as the top performer among third year students from all undergraduate programmes at the University, and received the ‘Chaudhry Nazar Mohammad Scholar’ award. Hamza Said, BSc Accounting and Finance student, secured the second position overall among sophomore undergraduate students at LUMS. Marium Naeem, also a BSc Accounting and Finance student, secured the overall second position among first year students at LUMS.
Certificates were distributed by Rector, LUMS, Shahid Hussain; Dr. Arshad Ahmad and Honorary Dean SDSB, Dr. Alnoor Bhimani. Addressing the audience, Mr. Hussain shared his personal experiences, and focused on the importance of upholding the values that are part of the LUMS culture and using the knowledge gained at the University for the betterment of society.
Dr. Ahmad shared the University’s mission and acknowledged student participation beyond academics, in exchange programmes and social initiatives.
Dr. Bhimani also highlighted how SDSB stood out as a regional leader in business education, and outlined future initiatives at the School to positively impact business and society.
Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS)
After a recitation from the Holy Quran, Dr. Ahmad, and Dr. Ali Khan, Dean, MGSHSS, welcomed the audience. They appreciated the students’ and faculty members’ resilience and adaptability amidst the challenging situation created due to COVID-19.
The School had 276 awardees, with a special mention for Umar Hussain Shaikh, declared Manzurul Haq Scholar, first position – overall; Iman Fatima Chaudhary, received second position – overall and Bilal Ashraf, placed at third position – overall. The students were presented their awards by faculty members of their respective majors.
In addition to the students’ awards, Teaching and Research Awards were also presented to faculty members, Dr. Saba Pirzadeh, Dr. Adeel Tariq, Dr. Ali Cheema and Dr. Ali Raza
Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE)
Dr. Muhammad Sabieh Anwar, Dean, SBASSE, congratulated the students on their outstanding performance and for making it to the DHL. He began his address with a few lines from the famous poem of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal:
He called SBASSE a ‘silent revolution’ because the education of science, engineering and technology is given to its students in a way that opens up their minds and to some extent, hearts. He said that the goal of the School is not to create robots, but students who think about Pakistan and look to the future to work towards its betterment.
Founding Pro Chancellor, Syed Babar Ali also shared a few words. He congratulated the students and requested them to not just conquer the world, but also think about how they can help the country.
The Abdul Razak Dawood Scholar award, given to the overall top student at the end of the first year of the undergraduate programme across LUMS, was awarded to Muhammad Hashir Hassan Khan, a BS Physics student from the Class of 2024. Moreover, 59 students from the BS Class of 2022, 83 from the Class of 2023 and 89 from the Class of 2024 were awarded DHL certificates.
Students who received the Honorific Fellowship awards for their outstanding performance in the field of basic sciences were also called on stage. Three students from the Class of 2022, two from the Class of 2023 and three from Class of 2024 received the Bilqees Mujeeb Fellowship award for their academic brilliance in the field of Biology. Two chemistry majors, one from the Class of 2022 and the other from the Class of 2024, received the Ahmed H. Zewail Fellowship award. Three students from the Class of 2022, six students from the Class of 2023 and three students from the Class of 2024 received the esteemed Chandrasekhar Fellowship award for showing excellent results in the discipline of Physics. Finally, seven PhD students who received the Syed Babar Ali Research Fellowship award for their excellence in research were also called on stage to receive their certificates.
Dr. Arshad Ahmad also shared a few words with the audience. He thanked the parents, friends and family members for joining the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the students. He said that the students must pass on this gift of education and learning that their parents have given them, to those who do not have the opportunity.
