LUMS Welcomes CS Alumnus Amaan Akram for Talk on VFX Innovation
LUMS recently welcomed Amaan Akram (BS ’99), Chief Technology Officer, Untold Studios, London, for an engaging session on his journey from computer science student to innovator in the field of visual effects technology.
In his talk, Amaan recounted his unconventional path, beginning with his accidental discovery of computer graphics in 1992 Lahore—long before the internet made such pursuits widely accessible. Over the years, he has led technical innovation at several of the world’s top VFX studios, with his work contributing to Oscar-, BAFTA-, and VES-winning projects. His pioneering ocean simulation software was licensed by Pixar.
Reflecting on his time at LUMS, Amaan credited the University for providing the mathematical and algorithmic foundation that underpins his career bridging artistic creativity and software development. “I’m an average guy with average grades,” he remarked, adding, “LUMS shaped me as an individual.”
Tracing his professional trajectory, Amaan shared how his career evolved from early work at Pinewood Studios to leadership roles at The Mill, MPC, and Technicolor, before joining Untold Studios as CTO in 2021. In this role, he continues to write code alongside overseeing technical strategy, recently developing cutting-edge hair and fur rendering systems that have transformed the studio’s creature work.
Throughout the session, Amaan urged students to stay curious, resilient, and committed to lifelong learning rather than seeking quick wins. “Find your unique intersection. Stay the course. Just keep going,” he advised, encouraging students to embrace persistence and innovation as the cornerstones of meaningful success.
